Taiwan to see eight major retail projects completed this year

The largest property will span over 36,000 pings.

In a recent report, Savills revealed that rising construction costs have delayed large-scale retail projects in Taiwan, with only Mitsui Outlet Park Linkou Phase II opening in 2024.

However, eight major retail properties are scheduled for completion in 2025, including one outlet, four department stores, and three shopping malls, totaling 120,000 pings, the highest new supply in five years. Taipei City and Tainan City will each see three new projects.

Here’s more from Savills:

The largest project, Farglory’s Garden City at the Taipei Dome, will span over 36,000 pings, followed by the Hanshin Intercontinental Shopping Mall in Taichung, covering 34,000 pings. Farglory Garden City combines Grade A office spaces, an international hotel, a 40,000-seat stadium, and a shopping mall, aiming to attract large crowds through sports events and concerts.

Meanwhile, Hanshin’s project marks its first expansion outside Kaohsiung, integrating with a nearby international-standard baseball stadium to form a large-scale retail district.

From 2026 to 2027, eight additional department stores and shopping malls will be completed, adding 260,000 pings of floor space. Over 60% of this new supply will be concentrated in central and southern Taiwan, reflecting the region’s ample land availability and growing consumer spending. Major retail brands such as Mitsui, Hanshin, Qsquare, and Chungyo Department Store are driving this expansion.
